How Much Nicotine Is in a Cigarette vs Vape Juice?

Making the switch from smoking to vaping is, by all accounts, a good decision.

At the same time, it's important to know the specifics about cigarettes and vapes so you can make the transition in a healthy way. Vapes are a lot more customizable than cigarettes are, and there's a difference in the amount of nicotine in both.

If you've ever wondered how much nicotine is in a cigarette, we've got the answers for you in this article.

How Much Nicotine Is in a Cigarette?

It should be mentioned that while nicotine is an addictive substance, it is not the component of cigarettes that lead to health problems like cancer and respiratory illness.

Those issues have to deal more with the repetition of inhaling smoke and the carcinogens contained in cigarettes. That's why vaping provides the benefit of a nicotine buzz without the myriad of health problems that come from smoking.

That said, the nicotine in cigarettes can vary a little bit depending on the type of cigarettes a person smokes. The average amount of nicotine that the body takes in per cigarette is about 1 mg.

The cigarettes itself is host to a lot more than that, though. A light cigarette typically has around 6 mg of nicotine, a medium has around 12 mg, and strong cigarettes have around 18 mg. As you move up the scale, roughly 6 mg of nicotine is added to each respective type.

Of course, as you move up, you are going to absorb more nicotine. Most of the nicotine in cigarettes is released in the exhale or lost as it burns off.

What About Vapes?

Because e-liquid is a lot more concentrated, the amount of nicotine present is going to be high, even in a little teaspoon of liquid.

Vapes are also a lot more efficient than cigarettes when it comes to nicotine because none of it is lost to excess smoke. That said, you're going to absorb far more nicotine in vapes than you will in cigarettes, so it is wise to start with liquids on the low-end of the nicotine spectrum.

You can gradually increase the amount of nicotine in your e-liquid as you become more accustomed. Starting off as a smoker then moving directly to a high-nicotine concentration vape liquid will likely leave you feeling a little queasy from the excess nicotine.

If you're a heavy smoker, though, you may need to start out high. If your goal is to wean off of nicotine altogether, you can gradually lower your levels until you're vaping juice with absolutely no nicotine. This is the beauty of vaping-- you can enjoy the process without the addictive additives.
